La Entrada – We visited a small finca which Heifer uses as a demonstration center in conjunction with Fundación Día. People from various communities can visit the demonstration farm to learn how to build stables, grow a variety of crops, use fertilizer, raise fish, etc.

Santa Rosa – we went to Heifer International office, then spent time at the market, walking around and visiting the cigar factory in Santa Rosa.

Families work the land together

Most communities are located in the mountains, making it difficult to reach and very tough to work the land.
San Rafael – We took a scary, winding road up the mountain to visit a family in San Rafael. The woman was making tortillas in her outdoor kitchen, and several of our group tried their hand at the task. The family grows a large variety of crops and even has a small store.

These bees are descendants of the Mayans and do not sting!
From India to the Dominican Republic, bees from Heifer International help struggling families earn income through the sale of honey, beeswax and pollen.
Beehives require almost no space, and once established, are inexpensive to maintain. As bees search for nectar, they pollinate plants. Placed strategically, beehives can as much as double some fruit and vegetable yields. In this way, a beehive can be a boon to a whole village.
Although most Heifer partners keep bees as a supplement to family income, beekeeping can be a family's livelihood. Your gift provides a family with a package of bees, the box and hive, and training in beekeeping.
A gift of bees is only $30!
