Gloria's sister visited us on day two, and gave a presentation on the different projects in Honduras. She mostly works with women in small communities. The women form small groups with 4 to 20 members. The groups collaborate and cooperate with each other for the betterment of their community.
For example, one woman was given a flock of chickens from HEIFER. She was able to feed her children protein and strengthening her family and local community through healthy relationships. Eventually, her chickens provided more eggs than her family could consume. She sold the extra eggs and eventually began breeding chickens. Little by little she saved money and together with her local group of women, they decided to open a local store that villagers are able to purchase food, medicine, and vet supplies.

Puerta de Belén , in the mountainous department of Lempira – we met at the house of a teacher and walked up the road to see Yiovani’s cow, calf and the house he is building. Also visited his sister-in-law’s impressive and well-organized chicken operation.
Chickens are a real value. Starting at six months, they can lay up to 200 eggs a year — a reliable source of protein for children who otherwise subsist mostly on starches. Extra eggs can be sold to pay for school, clothes and medicine. And in the vegetable garden, chickens peck at bugs and weeds, scratch up the soil and enrich it with droppings.
Chicks are an elegant solution to improving a family's crops and their diet — and to the dilemma of what to give your socially aware friends this season
